When Kenya initiated the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in 2017, it was clear many changes were expected in teaching, learning, assessment of learners, and construction of additional classrooms. In what is a major departure from the rote memorisation of the content of the 8-4-4 system, CBC aims at instilling core values and practical skills and competencies to ensure every learner seamlessly transitions from the school to the work environment.
CBC infrastructure was brought to ensure a smooth transition, in the additional classes process hence the CBC infrastructure project was developed. The government directed that only local contractors would be allowed to win the tenders for the construction of classrooms to ensure that the community benefited from the change.
About the project
Little Angel’s Academy, situated in Thika Town, Kiambu County, has served students from pre-school to junior high for several years. After the implementation of CBC, the school’s owners launched an expansion project to add more classrooms, ensuring every learner progresses at their own pace and reaches their full potential.
Construction is advancing in stages. During the first phase, builders completed a 180m² building spanning the ground and upper floors, creating eight additional classrooms. Work began in mid-February, with completion targeted for the end of March.
Clients’ dilemma
Given the project’s urgency and requirements, the learning facility’s owner sought a cost-effective, fast, and easy-to-construct slab solution that minimized waste on-site. Since students continued using the facility during construction, he prioritized a method that would cause minimal disruption to learning.

Solution by Ecoconcrete
Since the client faced challenges, we provided a precast beam and block slab solution, manufacturing it off-site and delivering it ready for installation. This method eliminated on-site waste, streamlined the installation process, and kept the project on schedule without delays.
Furthermore, EcoConcrete ensured the site remained clean and well-organized, preventing any disruptions to learning and co-curricular activities.
Conclusion
EcoConcrete has actively supported the Government of Kenya in constructing durable and cost-effective CBC classrooms. By delivering projects on time, we have ensured that students’ academic calendars remain uninterrupted.
